I think a first dance is along the lines of attending a debutante ball, so unless you’ve worn a white dress and had to waltz around a dance floor on a previous occasion, why not give it a miss and avoid the awkward 3 and a half minutes?
Debutante Portraits |
I’ve pondered the idea of letting someone else do the “first dance”. I’m not talking about sending my Made of Honor out to dance with my Groom simply because I have two left feet. Why not get professional dancers in to entertain your guests? We’ve all had our jaws on the floor watching Dancing with the Stars and SYTYCD when they do the waltzes or contemporary routines, wouldn’t you rather that for your guests, than to watch then you and groom awkwardly tripping over each others feet and counting “1, 2, 3 ,4”?
If the idea of letting someone else do your first dance just doesn’t fly, what about breaking from tradition and dancing something you know. Macarena anyone?
If you haven’t yet seen this video, have a watch now.
Another gorgeous idea that I loved was this wedding dance. I first saw it a few years ago, it made me cry then and it makes me cry now. But what sets it apart from the other million people that have tried to re-do it, is the commitment to the dance/characters. They’re not half-assed about it, it doesn’t appear awkward (even when she slips up). The guests are laughing, it’s an intimate setting with the guests standing less than 2 meters away. They’re really enjoying it and it shows. The look in the grooms eyes doesn’t change the whole time, he is in LOVE!
The famous lift |
Not many people can pull off the lift, but there are few youtube videos where couples have, and omg they’re amazing. But honestly, this is one of those wedding ideas that you need to really commit to, plan and really go for! Take dance lessons for a year, not just in the 8 weeks leading up to your wedding.
Thriller is another one that’s quite a popular choice, if you really want to do a First Dance, make it your own. Make it fun and enjoyable for you and your guests.
Here's a couple of other YouTube videos that I liked on the topic of Weddings.
This has nothing to do with Weddings but these two from America's "So You Think You Can Dance" (Randi and Evan) make an incredible couple and this dance is gorgeous!
And this has to be one of my favourite dance pieces of all time. Choreographed by the glorious Mia Michaels, danced by Randi and Evan. If you've ever got a spare half an hour, YouTube your way through the Mia Michaels SYTYCD pieces as well as the Tyce Diorio Breast Cancer Piece, the "Addiction" piece and the Heidi and Travis piece danced to "Calling You" by Celine Dion. Well worth the viewing.
